Habitat Home Program
Make a home for habitat
“…humans now occupy or have seriously altered nearly all of the spaces outside our parks and preserves. Each of us carries an inherent responsibility to preserve the quality of earth’s ecosystems. When we leave the responsibility to a few experts (none of whom hold political office), the rest of us remain largely ignorant of earth stewardship and how to practice it. The conservation of Earth’s resources, including its living biological systems, must become part of the everyday culture of us all, worldwide.”
― Douglas W. Tallamy, Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard
The Clover-Chambers Watershed in Pierce County is in an ecological crisis. Pollution, drying creeks, and extensive habitat loss are the norm. Our habitat is fragmented, and the consequences reverberate across the ecosystem. From the small Western Gray Squirrel to the mighty Southern Resident Orca, many species face outright extinction. But what if there was a way to reverse this trend, while improving our own lives and educating our community? There is a growing consciousness in our region about the need to not just preserve nature, but to practice coexistence. You may ask yourself, what difference does a native plant make? Well, plants are the base food for life in the region, and native plants have co-evolved with other species over the course of millions of years. Plants feed the bugs, which in turn feed other bugs, fish, birds, and so on.
With CCRA’s Habitat Home program, we invite individual land owners, public agencies, faith communities, and businesses to work with us to:
- Establish native plant gardens, however small
- Preserve existing habitat and incorporate habitat safe practices such as removal of invasive species, no mow areas, leave the leaves, and no spraying
- Practice responsible riparian buffering by planting enough native species to shade wetlands, absorb nutrient runoff, and stabilize embankments.
- Establish rain gardens to help replenish our aquifer!
CCRA wants to work with interested parties to advise, acquire plants, design plantings, and help plant! In return, we want your help to build a culture of coexistence. Applicable projects will be gifted their own Habitat Home informational sign and have the option to be featured on our website and communications.
